Overview
Internal article formats are the layouts used for news articles published at Yale School of Medicine. Each type supports specific editorial goals, content structures, and audience needs.
Never copy news articles written for an outside organization or website (e.g. AAMC or The New York Times) and submit them as Internal News.
If you’d like to link to articles like this on your website, you can submit them as External Article TypesPreview.
Article Types
Long Form

In this article type, editors can add quotes and media in the main body content of the article, but adding highlighted linked content templates is restricted to after the article to emphasize the main content.
Purpose: In-depth reporting, feature stories, or comprehensive coverage of a topic.
Unique Features:
Supports multiple content sections and rich media.

Can include disclaimers (e.g., grant-related).
Topic (Eyebrow Category) selection required.

Purpose: Brief news updates, quick announcements, or concise coverage.
Unique Features:
Streamlined layout for rapid reading.

Announcement
Description: Announcement articles are generally for updates about or recognition of YSM personnel and organizations. Related content links and people listings are available to add to the body of the article.
Purpose: Communicate updates about awards or promotions for individual faculty, promoting events, or other important department notices.
Unique Features:
Unlike other articles, you can include related content like people highlights, events, and calls-to-action directly in the body content to promote event registration, encourage readers to read more about specific faculty members mentioned in the article, and more.
Q&A / Interview
Description: Q+A/Interview articles are for articles built around an interview with faculty, staff, or other personnel. You have the ability to format the article in a question and answer style.
Purpose: Present information in a question-and-answer format, often featuring faculty or experts.
Unique Features:
Structured as a series of question and answer pairs.
Each Q&A block can be featured or reordered.
Topic selection required.

Purpose: Editorials, perspectives, or commentary pieces authored by faculty or staff.
Unique Features:
Does not include a Key Points field.
Standard opinion disclaimer is applied to the end of the article.
Periodicals
Description: Formerly known as print publications, this article type should only be used if the article is part of a periodical that publishes an online version on the YSM website using Beatrix.
Purpose: Publish issues of recurring publications with interconnected articles (e.g., Yale Medicine Magazine).
Unique Features:
Identity the publication and issue that the article appeared in.
Includes a link for visiting to the corresponding issue landing page.
