Overview

The issues management and periodicals tools within the Beatrix news module allow editorial staff to build and manage digital magazine issues for the YSM website. This page provides step‑by‑step instructions for creating new periodical issues, configuring their themes and layouts, and organizing articles and media on each issue’s landing page.

Issues Management

The Issues Management section of Beatrix allows editorial staff to create new issues for periodicals and organizing the articles into sections.

Editorial staff should have access to final content and hi res media files prior to creating a new issue.

Add Periodical Issue

  • Select the + Add New button in the upper right corner

    This screenshot shows the ability to add a new issue.

    • A modal window will pop up where you enter the issue data, including the publications name, date, and slug (URL) and cover details.

Publication dropdown

Choose the correct publication for your new issue, for example, “Yale Medicine Magazine”

Issue name

Enter an issue name under 200 characters, e.g. “100 Years of Pediatrics.”

Issue date

This screenshot shows the Issue Date picker.

 

Slug

  • This autogenerates the URL based on publication and issue name but should be reviewed for SEO.

Issue theme

  • Choose Light or Dark Theme

This screenshot shows the Issue Theme with the option to select either Light or Dark.

 

  • Intro text background gradient (options depend on theme choice)

    • Light Theme colors: Red, Blue, or Dark Blue

    • Dark Theme colors: Light Blue, Cyan, Yellow

Intro quote text

  • Limit to 1000 characters

This screenshot shows the Intro Quote Text field.

Intro background image (optional, disables gradient)

  • Selecting this locks the theme color and disables the background gradient.

Description

  • 4000 character limit for issue description.

This screenshot shows where the issue description content is loaded.

Cover image

  • Add the final .png, .jpg, .jpeg, or .svg cover image. File size max 10MB.

This screenshot shows the option to load or select from media library for the Cover Image. Aspect ratio is 4x3.

Hero image

  • Add the final .png, .jpg, .jpeg, or .svg hero image. File size max 10MB.

Hero video

  • Add a hero video via the media library.

    • Accepted file types are: .mp4, .avi, .mov

    • Max videos size: 4 GB

PDF of print issue

  • Add the final PDF of the issue to have stored in Beatrix. This is for storage only and will not display on the website, however, it should be ADA compliant in case it is needed in the future.

Issue sections

  • Create

    • Media

      • Use this element to add a video or image to visually break up the landing page.

    • Featured articles

      • Articles here are larger on the issue landing page.

      • Editors can add custom Display Titles under 200 characters.

      • Editors can select the Light or Dark Theme for the specific section.

    • Standard articles

      • These articles are smaller on the issue landing page.

      • Editors can add custom Display Titles under 200 characters.

      • Editors can select the Light or Dark Theme for the specific section.

Example of an Issue

This example uses:

  • Dark theme

  • Cyan intro text background gradient

  • An intro quote

  • A hero image

  • Featured issue section

  • Standard issue section set to light

  • Media section

  • Standard issue section set to dark

  • Standard issue section set to light

Periodical Article Creation

 

Create articles as outlined here: Selecting an Internal Article Type and select the article type “periodical”

Ensure the following drop-downs are correctly selected at the article level to associate the article with the correct issue.

  • Publication

  • Issue

  • Section (These should have been established in the issue creation process)
