By using a Content Summary Template, you can include a brief introductory paragraph from one component/page and feature the same component in full on a separate page.

  • These templates are particularly useful when trying to direct visitors to specific sections of your site.

The following instructions will provide information on how to use Tridion create and insert a summary view of one page onto another page and how to link this summary view to the page that contains the full view.

Table of Contents

Creating a Content Summary

To start, you can create a Content Summary by:

  • Editing an existing Content component or

  • Creating a new Content component.

To learn how to create a new content component that features text, visit the Adding Text Content section of instructions.

Important fields for Content Summaries inside a regular Content component.

Inside the Content component you want to link to with the Summary, the relevant fields are:

  1. Introduction text for summaries (Not shown in full view): Highlighted in yellow above.

    • Copy text from one of the paragraphs that would be suitable for introductory-type text and paste this into this field.

    • If none of your paragraphs have text that work as an introduction, create new text that briefly summarizes the point of your content.

  2. Image displays in summary views: Summary Views give you the option to also include an image.

    • Click on the magnifying glass icon to the right of this field (highlighted in green above), and find the image you want to be displayed with the summary in the Building Blocks folder.

      • Select the image and click Insert to add it to the component.

This image will only be featured when the component is used as a Content Summary.

For more information on using Images in Tridion, visit this section of instructions:

Once you are happy with the summary content in the component, click Save and Close in the Home tab of the toolbar (highlighted in blue above).

Adding the Content Summary to a Page

Once you have created or edited the content that you want to link to with a Summary, determine where in your site you want to feature a brief review of this content.

  1. Navigate to the page in your Root folder and open it.

  2. Click the Component Presentations tab at the top of the page.

  3. Click Insert at the bottom of the tab to bring up your Building Blocks folder.

  4. Select the component you've just created or edited.

  5. In the Component Template drop down menu, select the Content Summary or Content Summary with Overlay templates.

    • To add more than one Content Summary, repeat steps 5 and 6 for each Content Component that you want to link to.

  6. Once you are satisfied with the content on you page, hit Save & Close in the Home tab, and you are ready to Publish.

To Publish:

  • If the component you used is part of a page that has already been published, you can now publish the page that you just inserted the Content Summary template into.

  • If this is a new component that does not exist elsewhere, you must also create a separate page for this component to live in. This page must also be published.

  • To learn how to build a page, see our instructions section for an Introduction to SDL Tridion
