External Link Summaries

You can use an External Link Summary component to feature a prominent link to an external website (another YSM website or anywhere else on the web) with a short text introduction and link.

Like regular https://ysmweb.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/HELP/pages/1802895584, External Link Summaries are compatible with any summary or summary grid component template.

These instructions will provide information on how to use Tridion to create and insert a summary linking to an external site.

Click New Component (blue) to begin creating an External Link Summary component.


 

In the Building Blocks folder of your respective website, click New Component (highlighted in blue above) in the Create tab (highlighted in yellow above) of the navigation bar.

You will be taken to a new page for creating the component (shown below):

There are some important fields to fill out when creating an External Link Summary component:

  1. Type in the appropriate Name for the component.

  2. Select External Link Summary from the Schema drop down menu (highlighted in yellow above).

  3. Enter the Title of the External Link that you want to appear in the Summary.

  4. Use the Introduction text field to write a short summary of the website or page you are linking to.

  5. External URL: Enter the address you would like the summary to direct users to.

  6. Image to display in summary: This field allows you to add an image that will appear in the Summary.

    • You can only use an Image that you have updated to the Building Blocks folder of your publication (for more information on uploading Images to Tridion, see the https://ysmweb.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/HELP/pages/1808302203 section of instructions.

    • Click the magnifying glass icon (highlighted above in green), and you will see a pop up of your Building Blocks folder.

    • Select the image you want to include in the Summary and click Insert to add it to the component.

Once you are satisfied with the component, click Save and Close and you are ready to add it to a page.

 

Once you have created the External Link Summary component, you can add it to a page.

  1. Navigate in the Root Folder to the page you want the Summary displayed on, and open it.

  2. Click on the Component Presentations tab.

  3. Click the Insert button located at the bottom of the tab.

  4. In the window that opens, navigate to the location of the External Link Summary component you just created and click on the component.

  5. Select one of the following templates from the Component Template dropdown menu:

    • Content Summary

    • Content Summary with Overlay

    • Content Summary Small Image

  6. Click Insert to add the component to your page, then click Close to return to the page.

  7. Save & Close the page, and you are ready to Publish.

 

The below screenshot is an example of both the Content Summary and Content Summary with Overlaytemplates, as they appear on a page:

The only different in appearance between an External Link Summary and a regular Content Summary is the link, which has a different icon (highlighted in green above).

 

The other display option for an External Link Summary is the Content Summary Small Image template, highlighted in green below:

The Content Summary Small Image template uses a square crop for the images.
